- Neutral Ltd, Britain's Leading Macintosh Research and Development Company
- has released High Speed NeuNet™.
-
- High Speed NeuNet is an innovative High Speed AppleTalk™ networking solution
- that integrates standard AppleTalk with a fast, efficient data transfer system
- without the need for expensive bridges. It provides greater productivity for
- anyone who uses AppleTalk for any purpose, be it Full colour Presentations,
- D.T.P., C.A.D., Photo-Retouching, Multi-User Databases, Multimedia or any
- application that uses large data files. High Speed NeuNet can be used with any
- of the popular (or not so popular) AppleTalk networking software, eg. TOPS,
- DataClub, Flash, AppleShare or Timbuktu. Remember the general rule to apply is
- - If it works on AppleTalk it works on High Speed NeuNet.
-
- Upgrade your network at your own pace and painlessly (without losing sleep).
- There is no need for you to upgrade all your Macintoshs at once. High Speed
- NeuNet allows you to "Mix and Match" the Macs on your network. This is because
- High Speed NeuNet can transparently communicate with standard AppleTalk
- devices (ie. Macs without High Speed NeuNet) and other High Speed Macs. This
- will enable you to upgrade only the Macs on your network that do the "data
- intensive" work and still be able to communicate with your existing Macs. This
- way you can spread out the cost of upgrading your network over several months
- or years.
-
- Finding a happy medium.
- -----------------------
- When you have High Speed NeuNet running on you network you will start to see
- increases in both your High Speed Macs' and your standard Macs' performance.
- This is because of one simple fact, the more Macs you have running on High
- Speed NeuNet the more you free up the "traffic" on the standard speed side of
- the network and vice versa. So you will be able to find a happy medium of High
- Speed Macs and standard Macs to get the best performance/price benefit out of
- your network.
-
- Keeping the traffic moving.
- ---------------------------
- High Speed NeuNet uses a unique "Collision free protocol" which guarantees the
- performance of the network regardless of the number of Macs running on it. This
- will mean that there is not a sharp decrease in performance as the network gets
- busy and loaded.
-
- High Speed NeuNet and EtherNet™.
- --------------------------------
- It could not have escaped your notice that there has been a big push (by some
- of the big computer manufactures) towards EtherNet as a networking
- standard, so how does High Speed NeuNet compare with this system ? Well the
- first point is that High Speed NeuNet is an extension of AppleTalk, not a
- different protocol. This means that you do not have to purchase expensive
- bridges or EtherNet to AppleTalk converters to communicate to all your existing
- AppleTalk equipment, ie. LaserWriters, ImageWriters, ImageSetters etc. or any
- Mac on standard AppleTalk.
-
- The second point is that EtherNet uses a system called CSMA/CD (Carrier Sense
- Multiple Access/Collision Detect) which basically means that each EtherNet
- machine detects when a message that it has sent out collides with someone elses
- message. If this happens it will wait for a random period of time then try
- again (when the same thing may happen). This is called "the random back off".
- So you can see that the more machines you put on an EtherNet network the more
- messages are sent out and therefore more time is spent backing off and trying
- again. This is the reason why EtherNet networks suffer considerably from
- heavy loading. High Speed NeuNet uses a Collision free protocol which, as the
- name implies, does not generate any collisions. This eliminates the need for
- the random back off and allows the network to be used to the full. A feature of
- this system is that each machine on the network has an equal "crack of the
- whip" at network access. Another feature is that the network performance may
- not suffer to the same degree (if at all) as the EtherNet network when
- comparing the same number of machines.
-
- The third point is convenience and flexibility. High Speed NeuNet runs on your
- existing NeuNet network (if you have at least two of the required pairs
- connected on the back of the sockets). There is no need for the builders to
- come in and perform internal surgery to your office in order for you to use it,
- because you already have the cabling required. Just add the High Speed NeuNet
- hardware to each Mac you want and plug into your existing NeuNet network.
-
- Cost.
- -----
- As you know NeuNet is the most cost effective method to professionally
- network your Macintoshs using the networking capability built into every Mac.
- Now you can increase the performance of your network using High Speed NeuNet
- at a fraction of the cost of upgrading to EtherNet. Remember, you need only
- upgrade the Macs that need the speed !!!.
-
-
- Bridging the Gap.
- -----------------
- Integrating High Speed NeuNet with other networks.
- One of the best ways to bridge different types of network, eg. EtherNet and
- TokenTalk™ etc. is by using a software bridge. This has several advantages over
- a dedicated hardware bridge;
-
- Infinite configurations. A software bridge can bridge any network to any
- other network simply by adding the appropriate hardware and software to the
- Macintosh. Software bridges will also allow you to set up zones on your network
- and configure them using the Macintosh.
-
- Speed. A software bridge is as quick or quicker than a dedicated hardware
- bridge. This is because it would usually be run on a Mac II, IIci, IIx, IIcx,
- IIfx or similar NuBus® based Mac. All of which have fast processors.
-
- Cost. A software bridge solution for a "multi-protocol/multi-segment"
- network (eg. EtherNet, AppleTalk, TokenTalk network) will be considerably
- cheaper than the same hardware solution. This is because you will need a
- different bridge for each type of network (eg. EtherNet to AppleTalk, AppleTalk
- to TokenTalk, TokenTalk to EtherNet etc.). Where as one suitable Mac running a
- software bridge will be able to accomodate any configuration in a single box.
-
- System Requirements.
- --------------------
- High Speed NeuNet runs on any NuBus based Macintosh and requires system 6.0
- or higher. High Speed NeuNet only runs over NeuNet sockets (or NeuNet Daisy
- Chain Connectors), with the provision that they are wired up with at least two
- twisted pair cable of approved specification.
-
- High Speed NeuNet (NuBus) £295.
